An Initiative in India on IC/BPS

Global Interstitial Cystitis Bladder Pain Syndrome (GIBS) is the first initiative taken in INDIA in 2016, conceptualized by a team of physicians led by two leading urologist Dr. Rajesh Taneja (Chairman GIBS) and Dr Sanjay Pandey (Secretary GIBS), and Swati Spentose Pvt Ltd as a Founder patron dedicated exclusively to Interstitial Cystitis and Bladder Pain Syndrome.

Interstitial Cystitis Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic and debilitating condition impacting millions globally. Recognising the urgent need to address the challenges IC/BPS patients face, the Global Interstitial Cystitis Bladder Pain Syndrome Society (GIBS) has emerged as a pioneering organization advocating for enhanced awareness, research, and support.

Founded in 2016 as a division of the Orphan Disease Foundation, GIBS was conceived by a team of leading urologists, gynaecologists, and Mr. Vishal Jajodia, who serves as a founding patron. GIBS is dedicated exclusively to advancing the understanding and treatment of Interstitial Cystitis and Bladder Pain Syndrome. Due to limited knowledge and the absence of effective therapies, approximately 70% of women suffering from this debilitating condition continue to struggle. We aim to educate urologists, urogynaecologists, gynaecologists, general practitioners, and patients, while raising awareness among the general public. By advancing education and fostering understanding, we aim to improve diagnosis, treatment, and support for those affected.

In the past seven years, India has made significant strides in the field of IC/BPS, thanks in part to the efforts of GIBS and Swati Spentose, a leading pharmaceutical company in India with over 50 years of experience and the manufacturer of Pentosan Polysulfate. Our partnership has driven advancements in IC/BPS treatment, including the introduction of Pentosan to the market and its promotion through GIBS initiatives.

GIBS 2016: The “First Annual Conference on IC/BPS” marked the beginning of our educational efforts.

GIBS 2017: Released practical guidelines to aid in the management of IC/BPS.

GIBS 2018: Focused on “On the Horizon,” highlighting emerging trends and future directions.

GIBS 2019: Expanded our scope with “Beyond Horizon,” exploring new frontiers in treatment.

GIBS 2020: Emphasized “Conquering the Bladder Pain – WITH YOU,” showcasing our commitment to patient care.

GIBS 2021: Promoted “Educate, Identify and Treat” to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic practices.

GIBS 2022: Advocated “Save a Bladder – Save a Family,” underscoring the impact of IC/BPS on families.

GIBS has gained international acclaim for its scientific dedication and educational efforts. The 2020 annual meeting, held under the aegis of the Urological Society of India, was a landmark event, drawing over 500 delegates from 40 countries and featuring prominent global experts.

In March 2021, GIBS celebrated the inaugural GIBS International IC/BPS Patient Day,” and continued this tradition with the 3rd GIBS International IC/BPS Patient Day” on March 5, 2023. We also launched the IC/BPS Basic Module Course for Caregivers” and successfully hosted the First Global Round Table” meeting. This round table brought together international experts from 18 countries to discuss collaborative visions and advancements in IC/BPS care.

GIBS has achieved significant engagement from doctors across Europe, the USA, South Africa, Kuwait, Russia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Latin America. We continue to collaborate with urologists and gynaecologists to integrate best practices and advance the field.

The journey of GIBS is far from over. We are already planning for the 8th GIBS Annual Meeting in 2023 with the theme Compassion and Care for Bladder Flare.” Our goal is to disseminate the evolving science of IC/BPS across all seven continents, reaching more patients and physicians worldwide. We are expanding our presence in the Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and CIS regions, with future plans for China and Russia.
